Dracula's Guest and Other Ghost Stories by Bram Stoker

Dracula's Guest and Other Ghost Stories by Bram Stoker Review

Dracula's Guest and Other Ghost Stories by Bram Stoker Feature

NOTE: This edition has a linked "Table of Contents" and has been beautifully formatted (searchable and interlinked) to work on your Amazon e-book reader.

Included in this volume:
Dracula's Guest
The Burial of the Rats
The Judge's House
The Squaw
The Secret of the Growing Gold
The Gipsy Prophecy
The Coming of Abel Behenna
A Dream of Red Hands
Crooken Sands

"Dracula's Guest" is widely believed to be the deleted first chapter from the original Dracula manuscript, which the publisher felt was superfluous to the story. Other scholars disagree and believe it to be a stand-alone story written by Stoker that ties into the Dracula mythos.

The other short stories by Stoker perfectly capture the atmosphere of suspense that he specialized in.

Satanic Killings

Satanic Killings Review

See more picture

Satanic Killings Feature

The six-six-Sixties were the Devil's Decade. With its heady cocktail of glamour and gore, it’s no wonder dissatisfied youth have been drawn back to those years time and time again in search of inspiration – mostly artistic, some diabolical. The dark side of that swinging decade saw the rise of Satanism in popular culture: Mick Jagger penned “Symphony for the Devil’ and the Rolling Stones released the album, ‘Their Satanic Majesties Request’, while Anton La Vey, the founder of the Church of Satan, appeared as the devil in the movie “Rosemary’s Baby”. Meanwhile, another cult had begun recruiting for new members: Charles Manson was finding his ‘Family’. Then in 1969 all hell broke loose… Even as the Sixties ended in flames, the attendant black smoke formed new shapes for Satan to inhabit and still more powerful envoys to spread his word. Following the rise of Satanism through the Sixties to today, Frank Moorhouse examines the key cases and delves into the lives of the perpetrators, searching for the events that could have driven them to commit such horrific acts. Rather than simply criticize and condemn, Moorehouse remains open-minded as he trawls through the carnage left by some of the world’s most terrifying killers.

Anime and Manga: The Complete Guide

Anime and Manga: The Complete Guide Review

See more picture

Anime and Manga: The Complete Guide Feature

"Anime" (an abbreviated pronunciation in Japanese of "animation" in Japanese) typically is animation originating in Japan. The world outside Japan regards anime as "Japanese animation." While the earliest known Japanese animation dates from 1917, and many original Japanese cartoons were produced in the ensuing decades, the characteristic anime style developed in the 1960s - notably with the work of Osamu Tezuka - and became known outside Japan in the 1980s. Both hand-drawn and computer-animated anime exist. It is used in television series, films, video, video games, commercials and internet-based releases, and represents most, if not all, genres of fiction. Anime gained early popularity in East and Southeast Asia and has garnered more-recent popularity in the Western World. Anime has a large audience in Japan and high recognition throughout the world. Distributors can release anime via television broadcasts, directly to video, or theatrically, as well as online. "Manga" used outside of Japan refers specifically to comics originally published in Japan. However, manga-influenced comics, among original works, exist in other parts of the world, particularly in Taiwan, South Korea and the People's Republic of China, notably Hong Kong. In the United States, people refer to manga-like comics as Amerimanga, world manga or original English-language manga (OEL manga). This guide describes the history of Manga and Anime, its popular creators, biographies, the various genres, as well as the entire world of fandom and conventions. This is a WikiBits book - a compilation of related copyright-free Wikipedia articles and listings that have been crafted into a physical book that you can take with you.

The Musical: A Research and Information Guide (Routledge Music Bibliographies) Feature

The musical, whether on stage or screen, is undoubtedly one of the most recognizable musical genres, yet one of the most perplexing. What are its defining features? How does it negotiate multiple socio-cultural-economic spaces? Is it a popular tradition? Is it a commercial enterprise? Is it a sophisticated cultural product and signifier?

This research guide includes more than 1,400 annotated entries related to the genre as it appears on stage and screen. It includes reference works, monographs, articles, anthologies, and websites related to the musical. Separate sections are devoted to sub-genres (such as operetta and megamusical), non-English language musical genres in the U.S., traditions outside the U.S., individual shows, creators, performers, and performance. The second edition reflects the notable increase in musical theater scholarship since 2000. In addition to printed materials, it includes multimedia and electronic resources.

The Victorian Watercolours and Drawings: in the Collection of her Majesty the Queen Feature

A two-volumed catalogue raisonné of Queen Victoria's vast collection of watercolours and drawings, presenting through the work of over 1,000 artists a kaleidoscope of Victorian England.

These works, mainly collected and commissioned by Queen Victoria and members of her family, provide a uniquely detailed record of the Queen's interests and of events, both public and private, during her long reign. Many are by such familiar names as Burne-Jones, Callow, Dore, Haghe, Hayter, Lami, Landseer, Leighton and Winterhalter.

Delia Millar has been working on the nineteenth century drawings and watercolours in the Royal Collection since 1977 and has published extensively on the subject. Her knowledge of the collection and the archival sources relating to Queen Victoria's patronage and collecting activities is unrivalled.

Around 7,000 drawings and watercolours are described, with over 1,100 works illustrated in black and wgite aand 33 in colour. The artists' relationships with their royal patrons are explored in the biographies, and extensive quotations from previously unpublished material in the Royal Archives provide the reader with new and often unexpected insights into the period. The catalogue also contains watercolours and drawings collected by other members of the Royal Family before 1901, particularly the Prince of Wales (later King Edward VII) and his brother Prince Alfred, Duke of Edinburgh.
